Boxers are the best.

With all of the bad news going on in the world today I thought I would try to bring a little light to yours! This is a light hearted little vid I created for my Boxer! I also included a new tune I inspired by my four legged friends I have had the pleasure of knowing in my life.

More Mixing Tips: How to Use Reverb to Create Depth April 30, 2014

While reading around the web to educate myself and learning more tricks of the trade I came upon this and a few other blogs that to me showed a person how to make better mixes and how to correctly tweak a jam to sound awesome.

There are a lot of engineers and producers out and about who have great ideas and there is no excuse for anyone who is in this feild , to try to become better at it. So I felt I would share a bit of an excerpt from this great lesson over at Cakewalk BLOG   I hope it helps you or at least sparks an interest into learning more on how to make better recordings.

READ ON…….,

Mix engineers that have had their time behind a board can pick out the misuse of Reverb when they hear it. Just like with anything, applying the proper Reverb requires more time than just scrolling through the presets of the basic Hall, Room, and Plate algorithms.

Music tends to have a significant three-dimensional experience to it. This concept requires the understanding of width, height, and depth. The best way to understand this is to find a pair of large studio headphones and listen to some billboard topping hits that have dense and complex instrumentation. Grab a sheet of paper and draw two lines intersecting as well as one diagonally through the middle. Label them “Width”, “Height”, and “Depth”. Make a few copies of this sheet and as you listen to the music observe where the instruments sit in the mix. Mark the Toms, Snare, Kick, Vocals, Guitars, Keys, Backing Vocals, Bass, Strings etc. in their respective places on this XYZ plane. Once finished compare and contrast the different songs you listened to and you may notice how different each song turns out. Take one of your own mixes and do the same. You may learn something about your own techniques.

What does this little art project have to do with Reverb? Well, creating space is where the struggle begins.

In Use

The company Overloud has released a wonderful new version of their product “BREVERB SONAR”. The company asks customers to think of their ideal studio. In short they suggest that BREVERB SONAR could replace the “classic white 80′s unit” found in most major recording studios. That device is the Lexicon 480L which was and still is an iconic unit in many studios. BREVERB SONAR picks up right where that Lexicon unit left off as far as sound and use is concerned. Without realizing it I began to operate BREVERB SONAR with ease from my former understanding of how it’s predecessor worked. The whole fader-soft key interface is much friendlier than an attempt to understand how and why some other companies include a real time diagram of how reverb interacts with incoming sound. This unit is the perfect candidate for understanding how to apply reverb to enhance your mix.

General Mixing

Before applying any time based effects to a mix I typically will gather the stems in a simple levels and panning mix. This helps set some relatively even levels before applying and EQ, Compression, or Reverb.

I started the mix by raising the Kick Drum signal to an optimum decibel level. The rest of the Drumset was easy to place because of the minimal microphone usage. Afterwards, I bumped up the High Hat in the drum mix a tad because without it the song felt sluggish and choppy. After this I added the Bass signals to the track. Stylistically this song is of the Dub/Reggae/Pop genre so the Bass’ tone is quite heavy in the low end with less clarity in the high end.

After setting the rhythm section to my liking I added the Vocal track. The voice is the most important aspect of this style so getting it even with the rhythm section was my priority. Afterwards I gently brought in the acoustic guitar under the vocal and panned it to my liking. There are three signals for the Acoustic Guitar: The direct signal from the Acoustic Guitar’s pickup and a tightly placed 57 and 421 configuration directly over the sound hole. This allowed for narrow panning scheme between the three different signals without feeling too unnatural.

Bussing

Understanding how Reverb can be used to enhance the spatial tone of a mix first requires some setup within your respective DAW. I started by adding as many Buses as I felt necessary for the instruments that needed work. In this particular mix I set up five buses and labelled them: Snare Bus, Drum Bus, Vocal Bus, Guitar Bus, and Distance Effect. Each one had an instance of BREVERB SONAR loaded with all of the faders pulled downward. (By habit I never start with my faders up before I listen to them) The instrumentation of this track is somewhat simple by design so setting up these five buses was more than plenty for my purposes.

Acoustic Guitars

BREVERB SONAR’s power is reflected in the parameters it displays for the different algorithms of Hall, Plate, Room, and Inverse. Given the nature of the song I decided that using the Plate and Room algorithms were best suited for this style.

Routing
ll three Acoustic Guitar tracks were sent to the Guitar Bus and panned accordingly to match the way they sat in the mix.

SONAR adds a Stereo Bus by default. This automatically gives you the option for panning any sends that are added to the “Sends” section of your tracks in the Console View. The concept is the same in every DAW but the setup and routing may vary.

On first listen everything seemed too up close. The Drums, Bass, Vocals, and Acoustic Guitars are competing for the same space. BREVERB SONAR can be used multiple ways to alleviate this problem.

To rectify the clashing of all these instruments within this space I added some ambience to the Acoustic Guitars to set it below the Vocals. This provides a small level of separation from the Vocal track so that it sits under it and not directly in the way of it.

Using BREVERB SONAR’s Parameters

I was relying on the Size, Predelay, and Decay parameters within BREVERB SONAR to create this sensation of depth. The outcome is subtle but effective. By nature, the Room reverb is somewhat shorter than say a Hall or Cathedral reverb algorithm. According to Overloud the Size parameter at 100% emulates the sound of a large studio room. In setting the Size to 14% the “Room” that I created sounded like a smaller isolation booth. I don’t want to this instrument to be drowning in Reverb so picking the Room is the ideal setting.

I will be including examples of the Reverb parameters at their final levels and then a comparison of what that parameter would sound like if applied overzealously.

If you are interested in hearing more about this and other recorded examples why note CLICK HERE

If you follow the link over to CAKEWALK’s BLOG you will hear samples of the acoustic guitar, snar drum, whole drum kit and vocals. I found this article to be very helpful and insightful. It has pleanty of examples and a few ideas where with you can bring to your own mixing experience.

I am going to be placing MORE info on mixing and recording , social media marketing, how to license your music and all that stuff you need to start making more money and better recordings. I feel there is NO end to education but you need to focus on what you will use, in my humble opinion.

horse

horses around the corner

I was so blessed this afternoon running errands with my darling and by our home was like 5-6 horse chilling on this dude farm like always but they were real close to the gate so I , we, had to stop and say hi to them there were the coolest animals beside my dogs and cat.  I had such a time just chilling with her feeding these wondeful animals some were brown some were carmel or white. There was of course the one alpha and the rest just chilled.  As I looked at these awesome animals I could not help think a few things, of how over the centuries these animals helped mankind work, survive, thrive and grow. How we have worked together with these and other animals yet many folks either abuse them, or do not REALLY care for them. It is a shame.

It just amazes me that GOD is so righteous and cool that He gave mankind these wonderful beast to work with him. They are to me so powerful and awesome and I think that Jonathan Swift when writing Gulliver’s Travels got it right with the Houyhnhnms. I would encourage you all for a good read or for a good entertaining movie check out  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115195/

If your interested in learning more about his ideas check out these links below. The key here is to EDUCATE yourself. ANYONE can debase himself, anyone can be evil and mean it takes a real person of character to rise above the dirge of society. Then once you are being filled with light you then can share it with this dark world.

Anyways I had a wonderful experience feeding these wonderful beast who loved me back in return. I thought about their history, they have feelings to some degree I am sure. They are truly magnificent creatures! Enjoy  your day as I have enjoyed mine. Spend it with those you love, tell them and show them often for you never know how long you will be blessed with their presence.

If you are reading this and thinking that I am strange or silly maybe you need to spend some time with nature and animals or with those you love, and recall how precious life REALLY is. That there are always going to be evil people and there are always going to be kind, good hearted folks. Do not let this world make your heart so hard that you forget to take time to stop and smell the roses for as quickly as blinking your eyes you can lose it and it will be taken away in a flash. You then will long for these few moments when you stopped to hold someones hand, looked at a sunset, walked on the beach. It is cool This is the time of the year to be thankful and love folks. Rejoice.

I have been enjoying the feedback and questions from the previous posts I thought I would elaborate a little more and share a few more thoughts with you. Now before I begin I must say that you may not think what I share is perhaps a tip, but these have been things that have and still do help me out. These thoughts and ideas have come from experience and from certain folks I know in the business who are either A&R people, other Music Supervisors, Composers and if I may GATE KEEPERS Muahahaha!

Now some of this MAY hurt your heart and get you angry, but if you are sick you go to the DR to find out whats wrong. If you are trying to get music placed or make some money in the music biz you are reading this humble attempt at a BLOG. I do NOT have all the answers NO ONE does but here we go…

Ok so you have made some music, you are trying to be FAMOUS, you are trying to share with the world your most incredible song that has ever graced the ears of man….now what do you do? How do you go about trying to get it to the right people? Some of you who read this may have years of experience and this will all seem silly or maybe a review of sorts.

To some this will be strange and you have never heard of these things or even contemplated them. Some of the terminology may seem foreign and strange but if you take the time to learn and read up on  these things they will benefit you in years to come.

How do you explain something that has taken a life time to learn and put into practice with in a few senteces? How does one reveal the truth to someone when they do not want to hear it? Wait a minute what? Yes thats right many people do NOT want to hear what I am saying. You want OTHER people to do all the work for you but you want to reap the rewards of THEIR labor? Yes Mr Anderson this is true. I have seen it time and time again. On one hand there are a group of people who will bust their butts and do what ever they can to try to make it in the busness and then there are those who will go half way and expect the same results. Does not happen.

You have to do your homework no matter what you have to study, force yourself to do things you would not neccessriy do as a musucian such as read, educate yourself. I cannot begin to tell you how many people will email me or call and they have NO clue as to how things work and how this business end works, they think that you make the music place it on itunes, or make a youtube video and people will stop in there tracks. Not that there is anything wrong with not knowing for we are all learning. It is the fact that this is all they think needs to be done. That some one beyond the great expanse will hear them and sign them and their music as in the days of old, or the movies.

Ask yourself a few of these questions, and write them down on paper or on your laptop….

Where do you want to be in a year?

Where do you want to be in 5 yrs?

How do you get there?

Who can help you get there?

Why do you want it?

These are your goals, your blue print for what your trying to do.

Where is music used? EVERYWHERE

Who provides them with that music? How can I get my music to them, or that person?

Why do you write your thoughts and ideas down? If you do not have some form of direction YOU WILL NEVER go anywhere. You have to set out a course a plan. You have to put yourself in the right places at the right times. I believe it was Walt Disney who said  “The way to get started is to quit talking and start doing.”

You need to identify and try to start meeting filmmakers and music supervisors. A few things to try to remember when meeting and establishing ANY new relationships with in this business are as follows;

Composing is primarily a relationship-driven business. If you are not one who likes to work with people you may have trouble working in this field. Not impossible just something to work on. Be seen as a solution NOT a problem.
Be someone who’s easy to do business with and approachable. Do not be arrogant be a little humble. Like with in ANY relationship building, remember to consider others time and thoughts not just YOURS.

Respect their time – when you call, get to the point and always listen. Don’t take anything personally. If someone gives you their thoughts or ideas (like this BLOG) do not trip out just realize that it is just their views. RESPECT, relax, do not stop making music because you got rejected EVERYONE gets rejected.Edison the dude who helped discover the light bulb failed like hundreds of times I think even 206 times!
Always inspire confidence in you and your music. Always remember the unique aspects about you and your music.
Do your homework – learn as much as possible about the person & projects.

I will always share when I can to try to help out everyone. I would humbly ask that if you like this posting and have benefited from it that you write us back share your music with us if you want. I am always looking to network with people of like mind and collaborate so feel free to email. I would also like to ask that you share this with anyone you feel would benefit. It is like we are trying to put into practice what I have been writing about these past few articles. Lets build relationships. ROCK ON!

WAP PUBLISHING TERMINATES MOFILM COMMERCIAL AGREEMENT

UK FILM COMPANY IN BREACH OF CONTRACT

OVER 200 POPULAR ONLINE AND BROADCAST COMMERCIALS AFFECTED INCLUDING: PEPSI, COCA COLA, CHEVROLET, BUD LIGHT,

CADILLAC, BEST BUY, AT&T, KODAK, MICROSOFT

WAP Publishing has terminated their agreement with the UK-based MoFilm as of March 2012, due to non-payment of the license fees. WAP worked with MoFilm and provided them with music for over 200 online and broadcast commercials. All of these commercials continue to exist via broadcast and digital media and are viewed globally. Almost all of these commercials are now unlicensed and their music synchronization licenses have expired or they have been revoked for non-payment.

WAP Publishing represents many individual composers like, Atlanta-based Mark Allan Wolfe. The problem grew wider when companies like: AT&T, Chevrolet, Coca Cola, Pepsi, Unilever refused to respond to any WAP correspondence notifying them of MoFilm’s lawful termination.

We have contacted many of the 39 (primarily) US-based companies informing them months ago, how MoFilm has been terminated. We thought this proposed transference would be a simple matter. We assumed each company would handle it in an appropriate manner and respect the copyright of others, in the same way they so proudly and fiercely defend their own copyrights.

We explained how MoFilm was not paying WAP. In fact, as the licensor, all potential licenses should be contacting WAP directly. If all the brands would please contact us, WAP Publishing will gladly restructure an agreement on behalf of our songwriters/musicians”, Guy Ratcliffe/CEO WAP Publishing said.

Composer Mark Allan Wolfe said, “At first, I gave them the benefit of doubt until it amounted to be too much. If it weren’t for Guy Ratcliffe stepping in, I doubt I would have been paid anything. As payments diminished, became less frequent to then, none at all, it seemed clear, they were violating our agreement blatantly. Guy and I contacted our legal counsel Bienstock & Michael – Hackensack, NJ about the problem with MoFilm”.  www.markallanwolfe.com

WAP worked with MoFilm for over two years, dating back to 2010.WAP has tried every known way to rectify this. It is with great regret that WAP has to make this an international public issue. WAP does not want to embarrass the 39 brands involved, but the indifference and non-responsive stance – encountered to date – has forced WAP to go public. For further details and to view some of the commercial videos referred to, please see our blog at www.wappublishing.com.

As many of you who know me, I am a very mellow easy going person who loves people and hate confrontation but not afraid to go forwards when needed. After a long time of thought and trying to resolve something a certain way I feel the need to publish certain things we have been dealing with in hopes to fix things that are broken. I share this information with the hopes of building a bridge of communication and restoring relationships as well as getting paid for services rendered.

Tales of the porcupine July 30, 2012

Fable of the porcupine

It was the coldest
winter ever. Many animals died because of the
cold. The porcupines, realizing the situation, decided
to group together. This way they covered and protected
themselves; but the quills of each one wounded their closest
companions even though they gave off heat to each other.

After a while, they decided to distance themselves one
from the other and they began to die, alone and frozen.
So they had to make a choice: either accept the quills of
their companions or disappear from the Earth. Wisely,
they decided to go back to being together. This way they
learned to live with the little wounds that were caused by the
close relationship with their companion, but the most
important part of it was the heat that came from the others.
This way they were able to survive.

The best relationship is not the one that brings
together perfect people, but the best is when each individual
learns to live with the imperfections of others and can admire
the other person’s good qualities.

The Moral of the story:

LEARN TO LOVE THE PRICKS IN YOUR LIFE.

Here are a few more ideas I wanted to share with all of you. I have been thinking about all the people and composers out there who reach out to me and ask a lot of questions, so I wanted to share a few things that have helped me a long the way.

I also want to let you know I do these very things also so I am not above anything here. I really believe it. If you want it you need to go get it and work hard, NO ONE will give it to you. For starters it’s really worth while doing some research on your possible clients or potential music supervisors or film makers – looking at their previous jobs and the styles they usually work with. I find that one good place to start your search is Linked In – which also helps you see where people move to when they change jobs.

Spirit of ROCK

Spirit of Rock-Mark Allan Wolfe

Remember that there are hundreds of other composers out there all trying to get work – what is your unique angle/what will get you remembered?  What is your sound like? Did you send something unusual in the mail? did you make a funny making of video for one of your tracks – try and stand out.  Marketing yourself should take at least 50% of your time…Remember NO ONE ELSE WILL!!

Do some market research before you start sending examples of your work around.  Try and find out who you need to send you work to and what kind of thing they are looking for and what format they want to see it on, eg DVD, an internet link or whatever.

If you do it and try your best and faint not it will come to pass. It may take a while but if you do it and have the chops and determination eventually people will listen. It may take a long time before you are financially self sufficient to compose full time.  You may have to supplement your income with other types of musical work.  However if you have talent and determination it can be one of the best jobs in the world.

Feel free to share this and network with me and sign up or follow me on twitter, facebook or where ever. You never know who is listening and watching or when someone will call asking for your style of music.

So I thought I would try something new today. Always looking for something to cause a stir or get folks like you into learning about my music. I probably do not try hard enough but none the less you need to start somewhere.

I was thinking about how inspiration comes to me and maybe you but it usually comes as a surprise. A sort of wind that fills your heart and mind. Perhaps it is this way with you but today while cleaning I started hearing this melody come thru into my mind. I was thinking yes I dig this now only if I can just get it out of my mind and into music we would be cool. This is the never ending struggle we as musicians, songwriters or composers feel. It is like this passion that fills us, to strive to get it all out there and see what sticks. Some times it is just for you, others it is something for everyone.

Then you have fight past your own feelings and emotions for you constantly wonder, “what will people think?” I always try to throw those thoughts and caution to the wind. Let the muse lead you to the song. Not an easy thing to do hence we try anyways.

So I thought it might be interesting to share this humble journey with you and express what it is that goes on inside the heart when one tries to compose or write music. Now I must also admit and confess something terrible. I do not know how to accurately write out the music. I understand it, I know the chords most of the time, yet it is very difficult and mundane for me to be a copyist and scribe out the notes one by one. I do not have the patience or the desire to do so. I am more happy to try and find the song this way than the other. So lets begin. Over the next few postings I will begin to share a bit about the songs and we shall see what comes of it.

I would also encourage you if you listen to my music, please comment or share an email as some of you have already done, and explain or share your thoughts either GOOD or BAD on my music. I read every email and endeavor to learn and respond to each one, although not as fast as I would like. So if you dig it or hate it give me a word about it but please do not be vulgar or use curse words. LOL Well onward ho and lets begin….

Well I was wanting to share a few new videos I made and created recently. I do hope you enjoy them. The songs are a few years old but the videos are new. These songs have meant a lot to me over the years. I had a lot of fun creating the music and recording them. There is a story behind each one but I guess if your interested I can always tell the story just email me and ask me to share what is behind the songs if your interested.
The song first is LOVE SONG a vocal song I wrote for my wife and I hope you like the music as well as the lyrics. On this track is my vocals and I also played all the instruments as well.

http://embed.animoto.com/play.html?w=swf/vp1&e=1336839076&f=rjFPu1QUWzFnUU05i5Z1jQ&d=548&m=a&r=360p&volume=100&start_res=360p&i=m&options=

The second song is called PEACE. A song created about 10 years ago I recorded it in a small studio in southern Indiana. Again I performed all the music and arranged everything. This song has special meaning to my heart as well many different emotions going thru the head during the creation of it. I remember it was spring and the the trees where bursting with green and bird where singing there songs of love hence it was a very magical time yet inwardly I was a mess. So enjoy it.

So here you are pressing onwards so to say. You have created all sorts of music designed the CD’s, got tours lined up or at least some gigs even if they are just playing parties for the time being. None the less you got something going. You have a dream, a desire to share your music with the whole world, yet you do not know where to start. Perhaps you do know where to start yet you have been plugging away for it for some degree or been climbing the hill for years. THIS IS FOR YOU!!

There is this certain type of bamboo that grows deep in the heart of China and it takes like five- six years to even start to grow but when it does it grows like 90′ ft with in like 6 months! Consider the farmer who plants his crops and does everything he does and needs to for a crop to grow. He has NO idea that things will come about, yet he tries and continues to do what he does for hopes that He will eventually reap a harvest.
Mark%20Allan%20Wolfe

You need to have the same attitude, that no matter what you will climb this mountain. You will succeed in your efforts WHAT EVER THEY MAY BE!! No matter if you are trying to get some where in business, make a name for yourself in the music business or in life. You may be trying to deal with something that has kept you down for years and you try and try only to not see anything. For all you know right after the next hill, the next day the next swing your answers will come!

I wanted to just drop you a note of encouragement and give you a little hope for your heart. You need to believe in something so why not believe for the best. It is what keeps you going? To many people failing at something over a 100 times you might begin to think something is impossible. After 150 times you might seriously doubt your sanity and question your motives, yet you would not even think perhaps of trying 200 times, well someone did they pursued with something for nearly 999 times actually on the 100th time BOOM!! the perfect filament for the light bulb was found.
