I have been enjoying the feedback and questions from the previous posts I thought I would elaborate a little more and share a few more thoughts with you. Now before I begin I must say that you may not think what I share is perhaps a tip, but these have been things that have and still do help me out. These thoughts and ideas have come from experience and from certain folks I know in the business who are either A&R people, other Music Supervisors, Composers and if I may GATE KEEPERS Muahahaha!

Now some of this MAY hurt your heart and get you angry, but if you are sick you go to the DR to find out whats wrong. If you are trying to get music placed or make some money in the music biz you are reading this humble attempt at a BLOG. I do NOT have all the answers NO ONE does but here we go…

Ok so you have made some music, you are trying to be FAMOUS, you are trying to share with the world your most incredible song that has ever graced the ears of man….now what do you do? How do you go about trying to get it to the right people? Some of you who read this may have years of experience and this will all seem silly or maybe a review of sorts.

To some this will be strange and you have never heard of these things or even contemplated them. Some of the terminology may seem foreign and strange but if you take the time to learn and read up on  these things they will benefit you in years to come.

How do you explain something that has taken a life time to learn and put into practice with in a few senteces? How does one reveal the truth to someone when they do not want to hear it? Wait a minute what? Yes thats right many people do NOT want to hear what I am saying. You want OTHER people to do all the work for you but you want to reap the rewards of THEIR labor? Yes Mr Anderson this is true. I have seen it time and time again. On one hand there are a group of people who will bust their butts and do what ever they can to try to make it in the busness and then there are those who will go half way and expect the same results. Does not happen.

You have to do your homework no matter what you have to study, force yourself to do things you would not neccessriy do as a musucian such as read, educate yourself. I cannot begin to tell you how many people will email me or call and they have NO clue as to how things work and how this business end works, they think that you make the music place it on itunes, or make a youtube video and people will stop in there tracks. Not that there is anything wrong with not knowing for we are all learning. It is the fact that this is all they think needs to be done. That some one beyond the great expanse will hear them and sign them and their music as in the days of old, or the movies.

Ask yourself a few of these questions, and write them down on paper or on your laptop….

Where do you want to be in a year?

Where do you want to be in 5 yrs?

How do you get there?

Who can help you get there?

Why do you want it?

These are your goals, your blue print for what your trying to do.

Where is music used? EVERYWHERE

Who provides them with that music? How can I get my music to them, or that person?

Why do you write your thoughts and ideas down? If you do not have some form of direction YOU WILL NEVER go anywhere. You have to set out a course a plan. You have to put yourself in the right places at the right times. I believe it was Walt Disney who said  “The way to get started is to quit talking and start doing.”

You need to identify and try to start meeting filmmakers and music supervisors. A few things to try to remember when meeting and establishing ANY new relationships with in this business are as follows;

Composing is primarily a relationship-driven business. If you are not one who likes to work with people you may have trouble working in this field. Not impossible just something to work on. Be seen as a solution NOT a problem.
Be someone who’s easy to do business with and approachable. Do not be arrogant be a little humble. Like with in ANY relationship building, remember to consider others time and thoughts not just YOURS.

Respect their time – when you call, get to the point and always listen. Don’t take anything personally. If someone gives you their thoughts or ideas (like this BLOG) do not trip out just realize that it is just their views. RESPECT, relax, do not stop making music because you got rejected EVERYONE gets rejected.Edison the dude who helped discover the light bulb failed like hundreds of times I think even 206 times!
Always inspire confidence in you and your music. Always remember the unique aspects about you and your music.
Do your homework – learn as much as possible about the person & projects.

I will always share when I can to try to help out everyone. I would humbly ask that if you like this posting and have benefited from it that you write us back share your music with us if you want. I am always looking to network with people of like mind and collaborate so feel free to email. I would also like to ask that you share this with anyone you feel would benefit. It is like we are trying to put into practice what I have been writing about these past few articles. Lets build relationships. ROCK ON!

Here are a few more ideas I wanted to share with all of you. I have been thinking about all the people and composers out there who reach out to me and ask a lot of questions, so I wanted to share a few things that have helped me a long the way.

I also want to let you know I do these very things also so I am not above anything here. I really believe it. If you want it you need to go get it and work hard, NO ONE will give it to you. For starters it’s really worth while doing some research on your possible clients or potential music supervisors or film makers – looking at their previous jobs and the styles they usually work with. I find that one good place to start your search is Linked In – which also helps you see where people move to when they change jobs.

Spirit of ROCK

Spirit of Rock-Mark Allan Wolfe

Remember that there are hundreds of other composers out there all trying to get work – what is your unique angle/what will get you remembered?  What is your sound like? Did you send something unusual in the mail? did you make a funny making of video for one of your tracks – try and stand out.  Marketing yourself should take at least 50% of your time…Remember NO ONE ELSE WILL!!

Do some market research before you start sending examples of your work around.  Try and find out who you need to send you work to and what kind of thing they are looking for and what format they want to see it on, eg DVD, an internet link or whatever.

If you do it and try your best and faint not it will come to pass. It may take a while but if you do it and have the chops and determination eventually people will listen. It may take a long time before you are financially self sufficient to compose full time.  You may have to supplement your income with other types of musical work.  However if you have talent and determination it can be one of the best jobs in the world.

Feel free to share this and network with me and sign up or follow me on twitter, facebook or where ever. You never know who is listening and watching or when someone will call asking for your style of music.

Moments in Time by Mark Allan Wolfe

This is a NEW Cd cover for my latest project emphasizing on guitar electronic progressive Rock vibe with a twist. Very rocking and ready to go.

The picture is a collage of sorts from past CD releases and videos I have made. There is the logo of markallanwolfe.com with the dragons and guitar with wings. With the title “Divine Inspiration” I took that with the mixture of the “SPIRIT of ROCK” which is the guitar with wings, the golden Paul Reed Smith (PRS). They are on the monument behind as a testimony that I believe all my music is divinely inspired meaning that I believe in GOD and that all good things come from him. That is my personal thoughts and you do not have to subscribe to that but it is cool if you do not.

Then there is the LION statue, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, which represents to me JESUS Christ, the Messiah. Both the lion and the monument refer to the stability of ROCK and the strength of the trinity and how eternal truth is SOLID.

The shield he is holding up is the other logo the SPIRIT of ROCK or music. The statue and the monument both really were taken when I went to Savannah , Georgia it was at some park that I thought was really cool so if you know were it is you will say “Dude I know where that is” lol

The statue is really of Jame Edwards Oglethorpe info of the statue can be found here I liked the statue for a lot of reasons and made it my own in some ways but it is really interesting on what he did if you’re not familiar he was the main dude responsible for founding the State of Georgia.

LEARN how to LICENSE the MUSIC of Mark Allan Wolfe

The first spirit of ROCK I created to make look like it was behind a glass window I thought was good and a bit different. I was trying to show how our perceptions of how we see things are very fragile and our perceptions of reality can be easily altered or changed and become dirty. Also I liked the guitar having freedom, (which is a song of mine) but how music is free it can mean many things to different people.

Then you have of course the split face of yours truly again. You need to see who I am maybe you don’t but I thought it looked cool almost mysterious, for those of you who really KNOW me are laughing for I am a mystery lol I say this in utmost humility.

Then finally the sky which comes from the first real logo I created of the wolf in the sky and GOD;s all-seeing eye, not to be mistaken with the EYE of Horus. So all of you conspiracy nuts like myself will not think I am a part of the new world order.

There you have it a little more info on what lies behind the artwork and upcoming music from my spirit, heart and mind. I thought it would be a little interesting if not give you something to laugh at or ponder when listening. I believe music is an art form and there are many facets to music such as a diamond or jewel if we would take a moment to really listen to what the artist is trying to convey we may see it other than hear it.

Well I was wanting to share a few new videos I made and created recently. I do hope you enjoy them. The songs are a few years old but the videos are new. These songs have meant a lot to me over the years. I had a lot of fun creating the music and recording them. There is a story behind each one but I guess if your interested I can always tell the story just email me and ask me to share what is behind the songs if your interested.
The song first is LOVE SONG a vocal song I wrote for my wife and I hope you like the music as well as the lyrics. On this track is my vocals and I also played all the instruments as well.

http://embed.animoto.com/play.html?w=swf/vp1&e=1336839076&f=rjFPu1QUWzFnUU05i5Z1jQ&d=548&m=a&r=360p&volume=100&start_res=360p&i=m&options=

The second song is called PEACE. A song created about 10 years ago I recorded it in a small studio in southern Indiana. Again I performed all the music and arranged everything. This song has special meaning to my heart as well many different emotions going thru the head during the creation of it. I remember it was spring and the the trees where bursting with green and bird where singing there songs of love hence it was a very magical time yet inwardly I was a mess. So enjoy it.

For those of us who need to be reminded of certain terms and for those of you who have never known but would like to know what certain terms are I thought it would be a great idea to post or re post this definitions of terms from ASCAP.com I am a member of this orginazation and I am very happy to be. So let’s dig in shall we…oh yes if you have any questions, thoughts or comments please feel free to share them with everyone they might be thinking the same thing.

ADI
ADI or Area of Dominant Influence is the geographic area or market reached by a radio or television station. It is used by advertisers and rating companies to determine the potential audience of a station.

Blanket License
“Blanket license” is a license which allows the music user to perform any or all of over 8.5 million songs in the ASCAP repertory as much or as little as they like. Licensees pay an annual fee for the license. The blanket license saves music users the paperwork, trouble and expense of finding and negotiating licenses with all of the copyright owners of the works that might be used during a year and helps prevent the user from even inadvertently infringing on the copyrights of ASCAP’s members and the many foreign writers whose music is licensed by ASCAP in the U.S. [see also Per Program License]

Dramatic or Grand Rights or Dramatic Performances

ASCAP members do not grant ASCAP the right to license dramatic performances of their works. While the line between dramatic and non dramatic is not clear and depends on the facts, a dramatic performance usually involves using the work to tell a story or as part of a story or plot. Dramatic performances, among others, include:

(i) performance of an entire “dramatico-musical work.” For example a performance of the musical play Oklahoma would be a dramatic performance.

(ii) performance of one or more musical compositions from a “dramatico-musical work” accompanied by dialogue, pantomime, dance, stage action, or visual representation of the work from which the music is taken. For example a performance of “People Will Say We’re In Love” from Oklahoma with costumes, sets or props or dialogue from the show would be dramatic.

(iii) performance of one or more musical compositions as part of a story or plot, whether accompanied or unaccompanied by dialogue, pantomime, dance, stage action or visual representation. For example, incorporating a performance of “If I Loved You” into a story or plot would be a dramatic performance of the song.

(iv) performance of a concert version of a “dramatico-musical work.” For example, a performance of all the songs in Oklahoma even without costumes or sets would be a dramatic performances.

The term “dramatico-musical work” includes, but is not limited to, a musical comedy, opera, play with music, revue or ballet.

ASCAP has the right to license “non-dramatic” public performances of its members’ works – for example, recordings broadcast on radio, songs or background music performed as part of a movie or other television program, or live or recorded performances in a bar or restaurant.

Dramatic and grand rights are licensed by the composer or the publisher of the work.

Mechanical Rights
A mechanical right is the right to record and distribute (without visual images) a song on a phonorecord for private use. Mechanical rights or a mechanical license must be obtained in order to lawfully make and distribute records, CD’s and tapes. Recording rights for most music publishers can be obtained from

The Harry Fox Agency
205 East 42nd Street
New York, New York 10017
212-370-5330
http://www.nmpa.org/hfa.html

Music Publisher
A music publisher works with songwriters to market and promote songs, resulting in exposure of songs to the public and generating income. Music publishers “pitch” songs to record labels, movie and television producers and others who use music, then license the right to use the song and collect fees for the usage. Those fees are then split with the songwriter.

For more info visit www.markallanwolfe.com

Per Program License
A “per program” license is similar to the blanket license in that it authorizes a radio or television broadcaster to use all the works in the ASCAP repertory. However, the license is designed to cover use of ASCAP music in a specific radio or television programs, requiring that the user keep track of all music used. Also, the user must be certain to obtain rights for all the music used in programs not covered by the license.

Public Performance or Performance Rights

A public performance is one that occurs “in a place open to the public or at any place where a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its social acquaintances is gathered.” A public performance also occurs when the performance is transmitted by means of any device or process (for example, via broadcast, telephone wire, or other means) to the public. In order to perform a copyrighted work publicly, the user must obtain performance rights from the copyright owner or his representative.

Record Label
A record label (or record company) makes, distributes and markets sound recordings (CD’s, tapes, etc.) Record labels obtain from music publishers the right to record and distribute songs and in turn pay license fees for the recordings.

Retransmission
A transmission of a performance is one that is sent by any device or process (for example, radio, TV, cable, satellite, telephone) and received in a different place. A retransmission is a further transmission of that performance to yet another place.

Sound Recording
A sound recording refers to the copyright in a recording as distinguished from the copyright in a song. The copyright in the song encompasses the words and music and is owned by the songwriter or music publisher. The sound recording is the result of recording music, words or other sounds onto a tape, record, CD, etc. The copyright encompasses what you hear: the artist singing, the musicians playing, the entire production). The sound recording copyright is owned by the record label. The copyright in the musical work itself is owned by the music publisher, which grants the record label a “mechanical” license to record and distribute the song as part of the record.

Synchronization or “Synch” Rights
A synchronization or “synch” right involves the use of a recording of musical work in audio-visual form: for example as part of a motion picture, television program, commercial announcement, music video or other videotape. Often, the music is “synchronized” or recorded in timed relation with the visual images. Synchronization rights are licensed by the music publisher to the producer of the movie or program.
